Clean slate for some new ideas

I’ve been chipping away in Ableton this week on some longer jam-style recordings that I did with my modular case while I was up in Maine - slowly but surely molding bits & pieces of sounds into loops & ideas that are more condensed & tangible to my ears. This is my workflow these days in the studio. At the moment, I’m working towards a dub-focused album for a friend’s label that I highly respect. It’s a really satisfying journey that has only really just begun but I've never put such a stylistic constraint (in this case ‘dub’) on a collection of songs before. The ideas are already pouring out (I’m sharing an audio clip directly from Ableton below for paid subscribers).

I try to separate the recording process & the production process entirely, which is something I’ve been working towards for a couple of years now. I’ve found that recording various experiments with my gear without the intention of making a track is a really helpful way to not really get stuck with writer’s block. I go into the studio daily with ideas about which modules I should pair up or what specific function I can try using a specific module for or wondering how it would sound if I run one of my synths through a chain of guitar pedals then process that signal further with something in my modular case. The output of those experiments then lives on my computer for a little while & then I go back to them later with fresh ears is just seeing how things sound when you put them together.
